MINE IS THE STORY OF
TWO VERY DIFFERENT PASSIONS!
HANDWOVEN COPPER ARTWORK:
As a small child I was always attracted to textiles. Making doll clothes by hand for my various childhood friends, then learning to sew from my Mother, who was a master seamstress, and discovering the world of hand weaving when I was in my early 20’s. The hand weaving process was a natural for me – another puzzle.
For several years I only had a very small table loom, which is surprising for someone so drawn to the process. But, in 1984, my father and one of my sisters devised a plan to present me with a loom that my father built for me as a birthday gift. My sister had a motive, she wanted hand-woven leather fabric for some of the clothes she was designing and selling in the Denver area. Another page of the story and a piece of the puzzle was put into place.
For several years she and I sold our clothing line thru small boutiques and galleries. But things changed; she moved out-of-state, and I wanted to explore other things. I felt the need for change, and another piece of the puzzle began to emerge. I became fascinated with the new medium of copper after someone told me that copper couldn't be woven on a loom! For the past 15 years or more I have been working with copper as my primary medium, weaving most of my pieces on my looms – and adding embossed copper, semi-precious stones and what have you to create absolutely unique and compelling works of art. I am still exploring the potential of this medium and truly love the process and the pieces that come from my hands and heart.
